White-blotched Heterocampa

Well, I hope this is umbrata. Central Texas is far from published ranges for it, though. Wagner and Covell place its southwestern limit in Arkansas, but Wagner's larval photos are identical and the fore wing markings of the adult are as close as I can match to Covell's photos.

I can't think of another lep whose larvae exhibit so much variation in color and pattern. There are saddles and blotches of brown, cream, and green of just about every arrangement possible.

I suspect this variation might serve them well to keep birds from keying on one pattern. I say this because in the rearing environment, they are almost unkillable. If this cast-iron constitution went unchecked in the wild, we'd be up to our necks in this one species alone.
