Mature Eggs

Wilson's Wood-nymph Moth

As eggs mature, they darken and flatten somewhat as the coiled larvae develop and swell outward at the perimeter. I had not realized that the egg was so radially furrowed until close-ups, and, as I photographed this cluster, some eggs were beginning to hatch on the night of the 3rd day after oviposition. Eggs are ~.5mm diam.
